When we talk about world-class beaches, chances are Boracay is at the top of everyone’s minds. With its long stretch of powdery white-sand shoreline and crystal-clear water, it has become a premier destination for many.

Local and international tourists and travel goers, however, don’t need to limit themselves with just Boracay as the Southern part of the Philippines has more to offer.

Mindanao for one has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country — so beautiful that it is slowly becoming a travel haven. Cream Sand Long Beach in Cateel, Davao Oriental is one of those and it truly stands out especially for surf enthusiasts.

Cream Sand Long Beach boasts its 9-kilometer stretch of gray-yellowish sand, a cream-like color, with waves perfect for skimboarding and surfing. Not so surprisingly, surfers flock here all year round because of that.

This scenic beach has also become a refuge for tourists looking for those who want to destress. The laidback look of the entire place gives a more relaxing feel to its visitors. It is not commercial, not too crowded. Here, you can’t also see any large infrastructure built around the area, only a few cottages.

As a person who likes to read, write, and stay in my room for days just to finish a drama or adventure series, surfing and skimboarding are out of my league. Obviously, I went there to destress.

The Municipality of Cateel will not consider Cream Sand Long Beach as one of its gems for nothing. Its beauty is beyond words that you have to be there to witness it up close.

How to get to Cream Sand Long Beach

Fortunately, the universe conspires to let me travel even in times of the pandemic. Getting to Cream Sand Long Beach is not easy if you don’t have a private vehicle or a rented one.

But if you want to take public transportation, then, by all means, do so. As with any trip, your first destination is the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCTTO). There might be a long queue of passengers at the DCTTO entrance for safety inspections and the ticketing booth, depending on the day and time. Next, take a bus trip bound for Cateel. The bus fare ranges from P250 to P700 with 5 hours of estimated travel time.

Since you’ll be surrounded by people, either co-passengers or vendors, wearing a facemask is crucial to limit the risk of contacting COVID-19. Make sure to remain 1-meter apart from other people. Though very troublesome, you also have to wear a face shield for the whole duration of your trip. They require it.

Upon arrival in Cateel, you will be greeted by the highest waterfall in the Philippines, the Aliwagwag Falls. If visiting this majestic waterfall is part of your travel plan to Cateel, then this will be your drop-off point.

After that, you will have to take a habal-habal or a motorcycle ride that will directly take you to the beach. Cream Sand Long Beach is situated between Barangay San Antonio and Baybay, Cateel, Davao Oriental. Motorcycle fare is not fixed, so make sure to practice your negotiation skills before going here.

Worth noting is that getting back to town proper is a bit challenging because there are limited habal-habals around the beach. Worse, they might not be accessible at all.
